Everyone has a number of acquaintances, but no one has many friends, for true friendship is not common, and there are many people who seem to be incapable of it. For a friendship to be close and lasting, both the friends must have some very special qualities.
The first quality is unselfishness. A person who is concerned only with his own interests and feelings cannot be a true friend. Friendship is a two-sided affair; it lives by give-and-take, and no friendship can last lone which is all give on one side and all take on the other.
Constancy is the second quality. Some people do not seem to be constant. They take up an interest with enthusiasm, but they are soon tired of it and feel the attraction of some new object. Such changeable and uncertain people are incapable of a lifelong friendship.
Loyalty is the third quality. Two friends must be loyal to each other, and they must know each other so well that there can be no suspicions between them. We do not think much of people who readily believe rumours and gossip about their friends. Those who are easily influenced by rumours can never be good friends.
Trust is perhaps the fourth quality. There must be mutual trust between friends, so that each can feel safe when telling the other his or her secrets. There are people who cannot keep a secret, either of their own or of others’. Such people will never keep a friend long.
Lastly, there must be a perfect sympathy between friends – sympathy with each other’s aims, likes, joys, sorrows, pursuits and pleasures. Where such mutual sympathy does not exist, friendship is impossible.

Ai cũng có một số người thân, nhưng không ai có nhiều bạn. Bởi tình bạn thân thiết thật sự thì không có nhiều và có nhiều người dường như không thể có bạn thân. Để cho tình bạn thân thiết và dài lâu, cả hai bên phải có vài đức tính rất đặc biệt.
Đức tính thứ nhất là không nghĩ đến lợi ích cá nhân. Một người chỉ quan tâm đến lợi ích và tình cảm của mình không thể là một người bạn đích thực được. Tình bạn cần phải có qua có lại. Tình bạn tồn tại được là nhờ sự cho và nhận và không có tình bạn nào có thể tồn tại được nếu một bên chỉ cho và một bên chỉ nhận.
Sự bền lòng là đức tính thứ hai. Một vài người dường như không bền lòng. Họ vồn vã đón nhận điều học thích thú nhưng chẳng bao lâu họ lại đâm chán và cảm thấy bị một cái mới thu hút. Những người dễ thay đổi và không kiên định như thế không thể có một tình bạn lâu bền.
Sự trung thành là đức tính quan trọng thứ ba. Hai người bạn phải trung thành với nhau và họ phải hiểu nhau nhiều đến nỗi giữa họ không tồn tại sự nghi ngờ. Chúng ta không thích những người dễ tin vào những lời đồn đại và những câu chuyện ngồi lê đôi mách nói xấu bạn bè. Những người dễ bị những lời thì thầm gây ảnh hưởng thì không bao giờ có thể là bạn tốt.
Sự tin tưởng có lẽ là đức tính thứ tư. Phải có sự tin tưởng lẫn nhau giữa bạn bè để cho mỗi người có thể cảm thấy an toàn khi kể cho người kia những bí mật của mình. Có những người không thể giữ bí mật hoặc cho mình hoặc cho người khác. Những người như vậy thì e là không bao giờ giữ cho tình bạn lâu dài.
Cuối cùng, phải có một sự hoàn toàn thông cảm giữa bạn bè với nhau – sự thông cảm với mục tiêu, sở thích, niềm vui, nỗi buồn, sự nghiệp và niềm vui thích của nhau. Và ở đâu không có sự thông cảm thì tình bạn sẽ không tồn tại.

=> The first quality for true friendship is unselfishness, it tells us (me) that a man who is concerned only with his own interests and feelings cannot be a true friend.
2. Why are changeable and uncertain people incapable of true friendship? (Tại sao những người hay thay đổi và không kiên định không thể có tình bạn thật sự?)
=> Changeable and uncertain people are incapable of true friendship because they take up an interest with enthusiasm, but they are soon tired of it, and they feel the attraction of some new objects.

=> The third quality for true friendship is loyalty. It tells us (me) that the two friends must be loyal to each other, and they must know each other so well that there can be no suspicion between them.
4. Why must there be a mutual trust between friends? (Tại sao phải có sự tin tưởng lẫn nhau giữa hai người bạn?)
=> There must be a mutual trust between friends because he/ she wants to feel safe when telling the other his/ her most intimate secrets.
5. Why can’t people who talk too much keep a friend long? (Tại sao những người nhiều chuyện không thể kết bạn bền lâu?)
=> Talkative people can’t keep friendship long because they cannot keep secrets either their own or those of others.
6. What is the last quality for true friendship and what does it tell you? (Đức tính cuối cùng của tình bạn chân thật là gì và nó cho bạn biết điều gì?)
=> The last quality for true friendship is sympathy. It tells us (me) that to be a true friend, you must sympathize with your friend. If there’s no mutual sympathy between friends, there’s no true friendship.

They can share their good times so that the joy is doubled and the sadness will give place to happiness and a ray of hope. Do we have so much reason to have friends in this life? yes, of course. Friends play a important role in our life so that we need to respect them.
